The Sunday Funnies: Chicago Edition

While waiting on the airplane for take-off, Dorothy asked me, "Mom, when will we blast off?"

After we were delayed for two days in Chicago, I told Dorothy that we were leaving the following day, and she said, "Wouldn't it be fun if the airport closes and we get to see Grandma and Grandpa again?"  I answered, "Well, it is important to go back to Savannah, because your daddy needs to go to work, and I need to watch Willa."  Dorothy added, "Yeah, and I haven't seen Doc McStuffins in a long time."

We were in Chicago when Notre Dame burned.  Dorothy had a lot of questions.  She had seen photos of the fire and wanted to know if she could see a picture of the inside of the cathedral.  I Googled some and showed her.  She corrected that she wanted to see pictures of the inside of the cathedral burning.  I let her know that the fire was too hot for anyone to take pictures and it wouldn't be safe.  She countered, "But they can use a camera and take pictures through the windows."

At bedtime that night the questions continued.  After I let her know that no person got hurt, she wanted to know what happened to the pets.  At this point, Dorothy learned for the first time that the Notre Dame Cathedral was a church.  She questioned whether any kids who had brought toys to church could get new toys; and even after I said that people do not bring pets into church, she asked, "Well, in case they did bring their pets into church, can they get new pets?"

The Mitchells at Disney World

My sister gave us a photo collage with pictures of her children at Disney World.  Dorothy examined it and then said, "These are all my cousins...from Valdosta...who are in the same family...standing with things that are similar to Mickey Mouse."

The Sunday Funnies

Dorothy and Willa like to pretend-play mother and daughter.  I overheard Dorothy say, "Why don't you pretend that you're 10 and I'll pretend that I'm 90 or as old as my mama?"

Dorothy told me, "Mama, I would do anything for you."  I said, "Well, I would do anything for you, too."  I let a few seconds pass, and then I started naming a few of the things I would do; for example, "I would jump into a swimming pool of Jello for you."  Dorothy responded very seriously, "Mom, I wouldn't ask you to do that."

Dorothy asked, "Can teenagers drive themselves?"
I answered, "Some can.  When you turn 16 years old, you can get a driver's license."
Dorothy responded, "And what does that do?"

Dorothy has been going to a Montessori school for two years now.  In Montessori classes, teachers try to be very hands-off and respectful of the child's natural curiosities.  There is a new teacher, Ms. Ashley.  Dorothy came home on Friday singing a new song.  She said that the new teacher, Ms. Ashley, taught it to her.  Then she added, "Ms. Ashley said, 'When I am talking, who else should be talking?  No one.'  Is that true, Mommy?"
