The Sunday Funnies
"Daddy and me made these potatoes. We shook salt on them and squeezed the lemon drink in the lemon squeezer."
I don't talk on the phone much. I said to Dorothy, "Let's call your Aunt Mary Beth", and Dorothy asked, "Is it her birthday?"
Just before leaving on our Thanksgiving travels, I asked Dorothy if she wanted to come back to the table to take another bite of her breakfast or have another sip of her milk. She did, and announced, "I'm so glad we're doing again the things we already did."
Sitting on Mom's lap while Sarah used the computer, watching the screen: "Hey, why does that go 'Arrow, hand, arrow, hand'?"
Dorothy walked into the kitchen with all of her days-of-the-week underwear from her dresser drawer overflowing her arms. She asked, "Which one of these says 'Friday'?" [It was Sunday.]
Dorothy's bed is three-quarters full of baby dolls and stuffed animals. One morning she told me, "I moved my big pile of babies. My big pile of babies was bumping me."

Dorothy's Thank You List
Every night in November we each named something we are thankful for, and made a list. Sarah & Brian were thankful, as you might guess, for health, Irish football wins, dark chocolate, and a few other things. Here is Dorothy's list.
[Dorothy, what are you thankful for?]
[Dorothy, what are you thankful for?]
- Can you guess?
- I play with my Minnie Mouse toys every day.
- I want to go in the guest room. You say, okay, you can do that.
- Playing with those. [blocks]
- Cause I make a tower. Can you write that down?
- Because I helped Dad make eggs.
- Because we bought my flower and my candle in case I cry at school.
- Tomorrow I can have some Halloween treat.
- Because Mama and me made a smoothie. Can you write that down?
- Hey dad, what are you thankful for else?
- I am thankful for because I got lots of presents at my birthday party.
- I'm thankful for because you gave me all this food and this drink.
- I am thankful for because my hippopotamus.
- This food...this egg.
- I am thankful for doing this thankful chart.
- All this food. [What else?] All these. [points to condiments]
- This water, this fork, this food. Our couch and my new baby doll.
- Those hanging decorations.
- School because I like school.
- My stroller, my baby stroller.
- Playing Chutes and Ladders.
- Daddy and me making potatoes.
- My coat rack and all the stuff we hanged on it.
Happy Thanksgiving!

The Sunday Funnies
Dorothy looked at a small statue of a classic, very curvy, very topless mermaid in a store and asked, "Is that mermaid a boy or a girl?"
I've been known to sing "Shoo Fly Don't Bother Me", and Dorothy has taken that to mean that some flies are "shoe flies", as in, "Look, there's a shoe fly." Also this week we saw a "shoe bee".
I once explained to Dorothy why she could use certain band-aids from our closet for her baby dolls and play, and others were reserved for injuries. This is why when she finds a small scratch on herself she asks me for a "brand-name band-aid".

The Sunday Funnies
Dorothy attends her school half-day; other students nap at school and stay through the afternoon. When I picked her up on Monday, she told me that her friend Wren was "in bed". I said, "Oh, does she stay at school all day?" and Dorothy added, "And all night."
Dorothy refers to the dark (outdoors, or in her bedroom, etc.) as "the darkness". Also, sometimes "cold" is "coldness" and pink is "pinkness".
Dorothy peered inside a burning candle and said, "Look, it made a drink in there."

The Sunday Funnies
Dorothy shook me awake, pointed to the bright window, and said, "I want you to know that I know that it's morning."
Dorothy likes to have lots explained these days, which makes me realize how often I sing out loud. This week she has asked me to explain:**
Why "One is the loneliest number?"**
Why "Oh baby you got what I need?"**
Why "And you say he's just a friend?"**
Etc.
Dorothy was meticulously putting a top on a jar, and after a few attempts, she secured the lid and said, "Perfect enough."
Dorothy reported from school: We made up a new language today: Japanese!
