The Sunday Funnies

At a birthday party I asked Dorothy whether she wanted a piece of cake or a cupcake.  She asked, "Which one is bigger?"

We don't use much cash, but occasionally I will bring Dorothy to the Dollar Tree and let her spend one dollar, plus one nickel and two pennies for tax.  She was looking through my wallet today and opened the zipper to the cash and coins.  She exclaimed, "Why does this dollar have a number five on it!?"

Another birthday party had another piñata this weekend.  Dorothy knew what was up and stood in ready-position to pounce on the candy.  Some of her friends weren't part of the piñata line, and I pointed them out:  "I don't think those girls know we're doing the piñata.  Will you go let them know they can come take a turn?"  She turned her head to the girls, turned right back to the piñata, and told me, "They look like they're happy."

The Sunday Funnies

Dorothy does not usually remember her dreams, but she remembered one this week and she was excited to tell me about it.
"People were standing on a book and they were turning into dolls.  They were all standing on one book.  It was a pop-up book.  They were talking dolls."

I was tickling Dorothy's feet and I said, "They're calling to me like a siren!"  Dorothy replied, "Wee-oooh!  Wee-oooh!"

Dorothy and I were talking about a puzzle of the Wizard of Oz movie which her aunt made, glued on a foam board, and gave to Dorothy.  I said, "Your Aunt Susan and Uncle Don made this for you.  They really like to spend time together making puzzles."  Dorothy added, "And they like to spend time together gluing things?"

The Sunday Funnies

We were taking a walk and a dog followed us.  Dorothy said to the dog, "Go back home.  You can't come with us.  And we don't even like dogs."

Sarah:  Dorothy, do you want to wear this shirt to school today?
Dorothy:  No, I want to wear a dress so I can make a sand baby.

Aunt Jeanne gave Dorothy two Disney washcloths and we sewed them into a pillow.  Dorothy brought the pillow to school on Friday for show-and-tell.  I asked, "How was show-and-tell?"  Dorothy said, "It was good.  I said, 'I sewed this pillow last night out of washcloths', and Ms. Laurie said, 'Did you hear that, class?  Dorothy had a good idea.  She sewed two washcloths together to make a pillow.'"

Party piñata

It was not all fun and games when Dorothy assessed the line, realized that she might not get a turn, and burst into tears.

The only donut Dorothy knows is strawberry icing with sprinkles

After Saturday night Mass Dorothy was disappointed that there were no donut holes.  I told her we could go to church again the next morning if she wanted a donut hole.  She agreed.  This was so pathetic that we took her straight to Krispy Kreme.

The Sunday Funnies

Recently I'll ask Dorothy a simple question, and she'll give me a lengthy answer.  It goes like this:
Me:  Dorothy, do you want milk?
Dorothy:  If I go like this, the answer is yes (she'll stamp her foot once, or wave her arm over her head, or similar).  If I go like this, the answer is no (she'll stamp her foot twice, or wave her arm in front of her belly, or the like).
Then she will choose one of the motion options for me to interpret her answer.

We listen to audio stories that are often folk tales and origin stories.  After each fantastical story, Dorothy will ask me, "That's not real, right?"  I told her, "No, these are folk tales.  The stories are pretend but some of the things they are talking about, like the sun and the ocean, are real."  Dorothy responded, "They should be called fake tales."
