The Sunday Funnies
We were watching the Masters, which might be Dorothy's first exposure to golf, and she made several good observations. When a player did a practice swing, she yelled, "He didn't even hit the ball!" And when CBS showed a montage of players over the years hitting balls into the water on the 12th hole, Dorothy said, "Oh, they're showing the outtakes?"
Dorothy was listening to a podcast that tells folk tales, and the intro to an episode about Giant's Causeway said, "Now, scientists will tell you that these matching stone columns in Ireland and Scotland were created by volcanoes...But legend will tell you..." Dorothy hates volcanoes, and was coming up with an alternate explanation for the Causeway. She said something about rocks tumbling down the side of a mountain, and I reminded her, "Well, the podcast said it was created by a volcano." Dorothy retorted, "Well, only scientists think that."
Lately Dorothy will make up a game she wants to play, such as a pillow fight. I'll agree, and then she'll explain that there are 4 attempts in each round, and 6 rounds in the game...
The day after we got our second vaccinations, I was lying on the couch and Dorothy asked for a second Fruit Roll-up. I was thinking about how she was having to fend for herself for food that day. "Usually I would say no, but I'll make an exception today," I said. "Because you're too tired to say no?" she asked.

The Sunday Funnies
Dorothy asked, "So what are birds for, anyway? Making music?"
I mentioned to Brian that two people stopping to chat in our yard had complimented the gate he built. Dorothy added, "Then people will be like, 'How much for the gate?'"
Often lately, if you correct Dorothy's pronunciation as she reads, she'll counter, "Well, I say it like..."
"Dorothy, I have a picture of me wearing this dress when I was your age. I'll show it to you later," I said. "Is it in black and white?" Dorothy asked.
Overheard while Dorothy was reading and turned to an illustrated page: "Oh, I should have seen that! It's not the Fairyland Place, it's the Fairyland Palace!"
Dorothy's teacher was out for the day because her son was sick. When I picked up Dorothy from school, she announced, "We had a spare teacher today!"
Lately Dorothy is obsessed with the idea of a diary. I told her that I found one online that she could buy with her $5. "How many keys does it have?" she asked. "Two," I told her. "But I've thought of four places to hide the keys," she said.

24-hour Challenge
Dorothy and Brian attempted the "24-hour challenge" to stay outside for a whole day and night. Dorothy learned about this on YouTube. They did pretty well. This tent is in our backyard.

The Sunday Funny
Dorothy's teacher read Little Red Riding Hood, which included the mother's warning, "Don't linger and don't talk to strangers." Halfway into the story, Dorothy's teacher asked the students, "What is Little Red Riding Hood doing that her mother told her not to do?" She continued, "That's right, she's talking to a stranger." Dorothy unmuted herself: "And she's lingering!"

The Sunday Funnies
We were watching Enchanted, and there's a cute scene where a little girl is talking with the fairytale princess, and she says something along the lines of "boys only want one thing," and the princess asks what that is, and the girl says, "I don't know, my dad won't tell me." So Dorothy asked me what it is, and I said that I don't know, because the movie didn't say. "Can you Google it?" Dorothy followed.
Dorothy likes to sneak-read my People Magazine, although I tell her not to. She showed her guilt when she fussed at me, "You didn't tell me that Katie Perry had a baby!"
I handed Dorothy a chapter book and told her to look through it and see if it was at her level. She brought it back to me and said, "I'm not sure this book is for me, because the sentence doesn't end on the page." (She meant that the sentences continue onto the following page; I had never noticed that her books' sentences end on each page, and I checked, and, in fact, they do!)
