The Monday Funnies

Dorothy was doing a school assignment online, and she came to me and complained, "I missed two questions in a row that were about the second paragraph, and the problem is, I don't know what a paragraph is."

I was complaining to Dorothy about people who have been traveling for the past year and spreading Covid.  Dorothy decided to rat-out one of her classmates:  "One of the most likely reasons is Makaela.  She travels to a place called Jacksonville all the time."

"Mom, I learned that stars can explode."  "Yes."  "The sun is a star."  "Yes."  "What will happen if the sun explodes?

The Sunday Funnies

I noticed a big scrape on Dorothy's knee after I picked her up from school and I asked her if it made her cry.  "It's just a highlighting hurt," she said.  "What does that mean?" I asked.  "It doesn't hurt that much," she answered, "it's just sort of highlighting your boo boo."

We were playing a game where you put a card with an image on your forehead, and you can't see your own card, but you have to ask the other players questions until you figure out your object.  Dorothy was sneaking peeks at her own cards.  I placed a moon on her forehead, and her first question was, "What time of the day do I come out?"

The Sunday Funnies

We were running late for a playdate.  "We all forgot the track of time," Dorothy observed.

Dorothy wanted to play a guessing game about where she hid the key for her diary.  "If I guess it," I said, "I'll know where you keep your key."  "If you guess it," she said, "I won't tell you you're right, and  I'm going to keep a solemn look on my face."

"Mama, Mama, you gotta see!  The package says 'Barbie dolls don't stand on their own,' but I just got her to stand on her own!  Come see!  Come see!  But don't run," Dorothy advised.

Dorothy heard the phrase "pint-sized," and we ended up talking about the size of an actual pint.  I explained that the creamer carton in our fridge holds a pint, and that a big carton of milk holds a gallon.  Dorothy said, "I have an idea.  We can fill up the small carton with water and pour it into an empty big carton to see how many times it takes to fill it up."  "Okay," I said, "but we don't have any big gallon milk jugs, so we can use our half-gallon soymilk carton and fill it two times."  "We can fill two of them," Dorothy said.  "We don't have two empty ones," I said, "but we can fill it up and count the number of times, and then empty it and fill it up again and keep counting."  "Or, I have an idea," Dorothy countered.  "We can fill it up once, and just do the math double."
