The Saturday Funnies
A book we were reading mentioned an old-fashioned phone that looked like a daffodil. "Wait, what?" Dorothy asked. I explained how the phone was shaped, and offered to show her a picture of one. "No, you don't need to show me a picture," she said. "I'm thinking of one in my head. I can see it now. It's yellow on top with a green bottom."
I told Dorothy "no" again, and then said, "I guess today is a no day." "I'll tell you no, Mama," she said. "Okay," I agreed. "Mama, you cannot have any coffee today! And you can't watch any Veronica Mars tonight!"
When we held Dorothy's birthday party at Gram & Big Daddy's house, we found out that Dorothy had absorbed all the details of her cousin Mary Claire's similar party nine months earlier. As we set-up, she kept offering corrections: "At Mary Claire's birthday party, we hung the sign here..." "At Mary Claire's birthday party, we used the other cake plate, the one that plays music..."
Aunt Valerie and Uncle Daniel gifted our family a character dinner at Disney for Dorothy's birthday. Valerie packaged the gift card cutely with a letter from Cinderella inviting Dorothy to dine. Then Valerie told an excited Dorothy, "You'll meet the stepmother and stepsisters, too." "That's okay," Dorothy replied understandingly.
"Supper is ready," Gram said. Dorothy sidelined me and whispered, "They call dinner supper."

The Sunday Funny
I was watching Veronica Mars, and Dorothy said, "When she's walking there with her dad it reminds me of Nancy Drew and her dad." "You know what's cool?" I said. "They're both detectives." "What!?" Dorothy exclaimed. "Yep," I said, "Veronica Mars and Nancy Drew are both detectives." "What!? Why!?" she continued. "They were just born like that, I guess."

The Sunday Funnies
Dorothy got to "move her clip to pink," which is the teacher's behavior management system. I asked what good thing she did to get to move her clip in the positive direction. "I did hips and lips all the way through the halls," she said. "But I didn't actually do hips and lips the whole way, just my teacher thought I did."
Dorothy was eating a Tootsie Roll Pop, and she usually eats Dum-Dums. "This is so big," she said. "The only room left is my cheeks."

The Sunday Funnies
Dorothy's teacher sent her home with some candy and a note on the first day of school, and with a small book on the second day of school. I found the book in her backpack, which surprised Dorothy. "Wait," she said. "Am I going to get presents every day?"
Dorothy has always said that she wants to be a doctor when she grows up. A few days ago, she volunteered, "But if I can't be a doctor, I can be a nurse." "Why," I asked, "would you not be able to be a doctor?" "I don't know," she replied. "If I don't have the right clothes to be a doctor, and I just have the right clothes to be a nurse, then I could be a nurse."
We were watching a movie and the turn-of-the-century orphan was sleeping on the street. "She's sleeping outside. On a suitcase. Under a coat," Dorothy said. "That's not very safe."
The movie was called The Ballet Shoes, but it did not contain much ballet. In fact, the climactic scene cut from the command to "Dance!" to the applause after the show. "I thought we were going to get to see the dance," I complained. "Maybe the person who was playing in the movie got scared," Dorothy surmised.

The Sunday Funnies
Recently Dorothy picked up the habit of saying "very goodly", as in, "I can skip very goodly."
Dorothy was playing with a calculator. She asked me a few questions, like how to make the zero appear and whether she could make the zero disappear. Finally she asked, "And how do I send?"
I stepped out of the shower and Dorothy said, "Your hair isn't wet." "I decided not to wash it tonight, so I kept it dry," I said. "How did you do that?" she asked.
We have a new "stomp rocket" toy where you can stomp on a pedal and a foam rocket shoots into the air. Dorothy was showing me how to use it. It works well most of the time but occasionally one will just flop over. "Daddy calls those 'studs'," Dorothy said.
