(Dorothy pointed out that I posted the picture upside-down. She is at the bottom, but should be at the top.)

The Sunday Funnies
There is a picture book series with titles such as Never Marry a Mermaid and Never Upset a Unicorn. Dorothy was making up a few, like Never Laugh at a Leprechaun. I added, "Never Ask an Axolotl." "It has to be a mystical creature," Dorothy clarified.
We've had Barbie toys and a thrift store Dreamhouse for quite a while. Dorothy's friends are often more interested in them than she is. I found a Barbie with a prosthetic leg in Walmart, and this was the ticket she needed to start playing with the toys. When her friend Iona visited recently, Dorothy announced loudly as Iona walked through the front door, "Iona! I have good news! I'm finally into Barbies!"

Dorothy was reading aloud, and I commented that I was enjoying the book, but that the chapters are too long. "I like short-chapter books," I said. Dorothy smoothly replied, "You probably should say short-chaptered books, not short chapter books."
My orchid is starting to bloom again. "Dorothy, the bloom is open even more now!" I announced. "Oooohhh," she replied. "Can you see it from there?" I asked. In the sweetest way, Dorothy answered, "No, but that's okay, because I don't really care."
I was naming some classically embarrassing scenarios, like having a sock static-clinged to your dress clothes, toilet paper stuck to your shoe, or, finally, tucking your dress into your underwear. "Oh, yeah," Dorothy reacted to the last example. "My teachers are always alerting me to that."
I told Dorothy that her friend is going to have a birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese. She scrunched her nose and said, "My friends talk about that. I don't know what it is." I explained that it is a pizza restaurant with games or characters. "Oh, that sounds fun," she said. "I didn't like it because of the name. I mean, who likes cheese that is chunky?"

The Sunday Funnies
We were coming up with ideas for celebrating my birthday. Thinking back to her party and the sundae bar, Dorothy suggested that we have an "ice cream booth."

The Sunday Funnies
Dorothy and I have been reading her Phoebe and her Unicorn graphic novels aloud. She knows them well. At the top of each page, she announces which character she wants to be, as in, "I'll be Phoebe's mom on this page." She's looking for the character with the more interesting dialogue.
Despite our discussions, Dorothy pronounces the word "gymnastics" without the Mm: "gin-astics." She claims all her friends say that.
At school, two kids were playing ball at recess and collided; one needed stitches in his forehead. I figured this out after the initial story, which was that "Isaac bit Jace on the head!"
Dorothy learned that humans walk heel-toe, but run toe-heel. She tested the theory, and was excited that her source was correct. She explained, "Everything they said is true, mostly because they're scientists, but also because I tried it and it worked on me!"

I bought a travel toy that is a spot-the-license plate game. Dorothy noticed that the image of the Georgia license plate is different from the standard plate; I told her that it was an image of an old plate. "Mom," she caught on, "did you get this at a thrift store?"
We were watching The Music Man, and the teenage lovebirds are seen in the library sitting close together behind a large copy of Romeo & Juliet. "Romeo & Juliet!" Dorothy said. "That's a funny Easter egg."

The Sunday Funny
I happen to know all the words to the songs of Beauty and the Beast, and couldn't help myself while we were watching the live-action show on Disney Plus. "Mom," Dorothy looked at me, "this isn't technically a sing-a-long."
